Le Bouchon, Maldon

Another week, another meal out for someone's birthday. It's that time of year for my family - we went to Jamie's Italian in Chelmsford for my Mum's birthday in February (review here) - and this weekend was no exception. My brother Duncan turned 16 on Friday and of course we had to go out and about...

Another new restaurant for me, Le Bouchon in Maldon started off in good stead when I saw that they were also a cocktail bar, and whilst I was driving home and thus alcohol was off limits for me, I had my fingers crossed that they had a good selection of mocktails (more on that later) and if I did like it, it would be a new place to head with my girl friends when they're all eventually 18!

The service was absolutely brilliant; we had the lovely waitress called Louise who had an excellent sense of humour, whilst the other staff were friendly and attentive (posh word haha). I also loved the fact that there was a resident magician, who was very impressive considering the limited space and time he had with each table - his slight of hand and illusions were pretty darn great!

The setting was also pretty - there was a flower placed on each table and there was enough light and brightness to the room that not even my Nan would struggle with (it also meant I could take alright photos as well!). It always felt light and airy and didn't have that atmosphere at other fancier restaurant where everyone feels slightly awkward and conversation jilted; we were able to go about our normal conversation without feeling judged or out of place, something I really value in a restaurant like Le Bouchon.
I wasn't let down at all by the drinks selection, either. They had 3 or 4 mocktails to choose from (see the cocktail list here), each sounding equally delicious as the last; however I ordered the Berry Refreshing and the Passion de Paris ones - both were super yummy and did actually quench my thirst! If I had to choose one though, it would be the latter as the passion fruit flavour was perfect for me. My Mum ordered their Chanel No. 6 Cocktail which was lovely, and whilst they were a little pricey, they certainly weren't lacking on the alcohol (Mum's was mainly vodka and Champagne) and definitely matched London prices!

The food was so delicious, too and the choice was varied enough that there was something for everyone... I keep dreaming about the Mussels I had to start; I could have also opted for this as a main course. I then had the roast chicken, because it was Sunday after all (see the Sunday lunch menu here) - the chicken was moist, the potatoes were lovely and I actually went back for seconds of the vegetables (surprisingly) because they were also very well cooked.
There wasn't one thing that I would fault when it came down to the food, other than the fact I didn't have room for a dessert! However, whilst this was the case for me, both of my parents and my brother did choose something, whilst I just had a pot of tea - Duncan's lemon tart was delicious and would have been the dessert I would have chosen, had I not already felt I was about to roll out of the restaurant!

Dress code is normally "smart chic" and Duncan and I fitted in perfectly with our outfits (his suit is from Thomas Nash at Debenhams a couple of years ago)... This is yet another example of a photo in which he looks older than me - oh the woes of a 5ft 1" girl who had to drive, thus no heels!
Duncan's steak and some of the best chips I've ever tasted!
Whilst the restaurant is actually located in the middle of an estate and isn't the easiest place to get to from our house (about a 30 minute drive), don't let that put you off as we all had an amazing experience and I think even Duncan was impressed with his meal of Steak and Chips - a massive achievement! If you get the chance and you're near by, do give Le Bouchon a visit because I'm going to make sure we go back very soon! Have a good week...
