Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea

I've just realised I didn't blog about my incredible Charlie and The Chocolate Factory afternoon tea at One Aldwych! "Why haven't you?"  I hear you cry, and I know you want my honest opinion but it really is boring, "I just forgot". No clue how.

A birthday treat from my friends, I was whisked away to London last Sunday for a day filled with shopping (we visited Covent Garden) and eating... then rolling home! Therefore, I thought I'd share with you my highlights of it and why you should go; short answer, it's so bizarre that you just have to experience it once!

We arrived at the swanky One Aldwych with umbrellas in hand (it was the day it tipped it down!), and got seated almost straight away despite the fact we were fairly early - we'd even been to a nearby cafe before hand to kill sometime! Although my friends had kindly paid for the tea option, I'd been told by Penny (of lilliesandlove.co.uk) that the Cocktail Charlie was a must... so of course we upgraded. A strong blend of Dalmore Whisky, Cherry Marnier, chocolate bitters, grapefruit juice and Champagne presented in a transparent tea pot so you could witness the bubbling, dry iced cocktail (very Heston Blumenthal-esque) at it's finest.

It was then time for the savoury course, and having been asked for any allergies (they are apparently very good at accommodating to needs) we tucked in to our sandwiches, tart and quiche. Notable delights were the leek and stilton quiche, the tomato tart and the most yummy smoked salmon sandwich.

And then came the lavender earl grey to accompany our scones, brioche and other sweet treats! I have to admit the tea was rather delish and was strangely complimentary of all of the chocolate and sugar we then consumed. Our favourites included the Eton Mess, the chocolate caramel milk and the Chocolate Eggs (they looked like creme eggs, yet the inside tasted of solero) which were absolutely to die for! The candy floss was also rather fun, and we were given the challenge to guess the flavour so I won't ruin that for you, but let me know if you do go and tell me if you got it right.

I had a wonderful day spent with my friends... my only niggle? The lighting! We couldn't take a decent photo of us because of it (we all like goblins thanks to the weird shadows) and my pictures of the food aren't excellent... but oh well! I even spied a gorgeous Kate Spade bag that I now keep dreaming about, so keep your eyes peeled (the staff in the Covent Garden store gave some of the best customer service!).

I hope you have a lovely week, check back on Friday for the next instalment for #countdowntochristmas series!
